- Despite their fierce appearance, some African Bullfrogs are kept as exotic pets because of their impressive size and unique behaviors.
- Its genus name, Pyxicephalus, gives it the pet-trade nickname "pixie frog" — an absurd label for an animal that can weigh more than a house cat. The cocoon it forms during aestivation is made of dozens of unshed skin layers, leaving only the nostrils clear to breathe. Males have been recorded charging and biting the legs of lions and elephants that come too close to their tadpoles.
