- Despite their name, African Butterflyfish are not related to marine butterflyfish; they belong to a unique, ancient lineage of freshwater fish.
- African Butterflyfish can glide short distances above the water by spreading their pectoral fins, helping them escape predators. They have excellent vision for detecting prey at the water's surface and can leap out of the water to catch insects. Their prehistoric appearance has remained largely unchanged for millions of years.
