Xenopus laevis

Did you know?
- African Clawed Frogs were once widely used in human pregnancy tests because their hormones cause them to lay eggs when exposed to a pregnant woman's urine.
- Xenopus eggs are large, hardy and develop outside the mother, which made this frog one of the founding model organisms of developmental biology; its embryos have flown on the Space Shuttle. Feral populations descended from escaped or dumped laboratory and pet animals now live in California, Chile, Wales and elsewhere. Because it has no tongue, it cannot catch anything on land, and a Xenopus removed from water is nearly helpless.
