- If threatened, the African Fat-tailed Gecko can detach its tail, which continues to wriggle and distract predators, giving the gecko a chance to escape.
- Unlike many geckos, the African Fat-tailed Gecko has movable eyelids and cannot climb smooth vertical surfaces. Its tail serves as both a fat reserve and a defense mechanism, as it can be dropped to distract predators. These geckos communicate through chirps and tail-waving gestures.
