- The African Grey Parrot is considered the best talking parrot in the world, with some individuals able to mimic not only words but also human-like voices and sounds such as phones ringing or microwaves beeping.
- Alex, a grey, learned roughly a hundred labels and could combine categories, naming which object was both green and three-cornered. He grasped "same", "different" and a functional zero — and is the only non-human animal recorded asking a question about himself. Greys often live past fifty, and an isolated, bored one will pluck out its own feathers. The pet trade driven by that intelligence helped push the species to endangered.
