- Female lions, or lionesses, do most of the hunting for the pride and coordinate their efforts to take down large prey.
- The last wild non-African lions survive as a single Asiatic population in India's Gir Forest, all of them descended from a few dozen animals that survived the early twentieth century. Lion cubs are born with spotted coats, faint leftovers of an ancestor that hunted in cover, and the spots fade with age. Unlike domestic cats, lions cannot purr continuously — the flexible, incompletely ossified hyoid apparatus that allows roaring rules out a sustained purr.
