- The African lungfish can slow its metabolism by up to 60% and survive for years in a dormant state during droughts.
- African lungfish can survive out of water for months by burying themselves in mud and breathing air. They have a spiral valve intestine, similar to some sharks, which aids in digestion. Their closest living relatives are the coelacanths, another ancient group of lobe-finned fishes.
