- Unlike many tortoises, the African Spurred Tortoise can grow rapidly, sometimes gaining several pounds per year when young.
- African Spurred Tortoises are exceptional diggers, often creating burrows up to 10 feet long to escape the heat. They can survive for weeks without water by storing it in their bladders. Despite their size, young sulcatas are vulnerable to predators and environmental stress.
