- Despite being called the Amazon Kingfisher, this species can be found as far north as southern Texas and Mexico, not just in the Amazon Basin.
- Unlike some other kingfishers, the Amazon Kingfisher often hovers above water before diving. Males and females can be distinguished by the color pattern on their chest. They dig burrows in riverbanks for nesting, which can be up to a meter long.
