Amazon River Dolphin
Inia geoffrensis
The boto is the largest river dolphin, up to 2.5 m and 185 kg, and it is built for a forest rather than for open water. Its neck vertebrae are unfused, so it can turn its head roughly 90 degrees โ useless in the sea, essential for threading between drowned trunks in the varzea fโฆ
Did you know?
- Despite living in murky river waters, Amazon River Dolphins have excellent eyesight above and below the water surface.
- Amazonian folklore holds that the boto transforms at night into a handsome man in a white hat who seduces village women, a story that historically protected the species from being killed. Their eyes are small but functional, and they can see well both in and out of water despite the darkness of blackwater rivers. Botos are killed as bait for the piracatinga, a scavenging catfish, and this fishery drove sharp declines before Brazil banned it.
