Amazonian Manatee
Trichechus inunguis
The Amazonian manatee is the only sirenian that lives exclusively in fresh water, never entering the sea, and it is the smallest and slimmest of the manatees. Its scientific name, Trichechus inunguis, means "without nails" β unlike its Caribbean cousin it has no nails on its fliβ¦
Did you know?
- The Amazonian manatee is the only manatee species that has never been found in saltwater environments.
- Amazonian manatees have almost no blubber and cannot survive cold water, which confines them to the warm Amazon basin. An adult eats up to about 8 percent of its body weight in vegetation daily during the flood season. They are the only manatee with a distinctive white or pink belly patch, and rescued orphaned calves are a common sight in Brazilian and Peruvian rehabilitation centres.
