Did you know?
- Bison are not true buffaloes—despite often being called 'buffalo', they are only distantly related to the African and Asian buffalo species.
- Despite their massive size, bison can run at speeds up to 35 miles per hour, showcasing remarkable agility. Unlike the European bison, which primarily inhabits forested areas, the American bison is more adapted to open plains, a trait that has influenced their grazing and migratory behaviors. Bison have a unique digestive system with a four-chambered stomach, allowing them to efficiently process tough grasses and maximize nutrient extraction. Interestingly, bison are known to wallow in dust or mud to deter parasites and insects, a behavior that also helps to create microhabitats for other species.
