- Bison are not true buffaloes—despite often being called 'buffalo', they are only distantly related to the African and Asian buffalo species.
- American Bison can run up to 35 miles per hour and are surprisingly agile despite their large size. They use wallows, or shallow depressions in the ground, to bathe in dust and help shed fur and parasites. Bison herds play a vital role in shaping grassland habitats, benefiting many other plant and animal species.
