American Dipper
Cinclus mexicanus
The American Dipper is a stout, slate-gray songbird uniquely adapted to life along fast-flowing, cold mountain streams in western North and Central America. Notable for its bobbing or 'dipping' motion, this bird can walk underwater in search of aquatic insects and larvae, thanksβ¦
Did you know?
- Unlike most songbirds, the American Dipper can swim and even walk along the bottom of swift streams, using its wings for balance underwater.
- American Dippers have a nictitating membrane that allows them to see underwater, and their blood has extra hemoglobin to help them thrive in oxygen-rich, cold water environments. They build mossy nests near waterfalls and rushing streams, often tucked into crevices or behind cascades.
