The breed was originally called the 'American Spitz' but was renamed during World War I due to anti-German sentiment.
American Eskimo Dogs were popular circus performers in the early 20th century due to their intelligence and trainability. Their dazzling white coats and lively personalities made them crowd favorites. Despite their sled-dog-sounding name, they have no direct ties to Eskimo culture.
