- Despite their tropical appearance, American Flamingos can tolerate surprisingly cool temperatures and have even been seen feeding in chilly waters.
- It is the most vividly pink of all flamingos — and the colour comes from carotenoids in its food, so it honestly advertises how well the bird is feeding. Chicks hatch grey-white and colour up over years. It feeds with its head upside down, filtering water on the same principle as a baleen whale. It lives in hypersaline lagoons where almost nothing else survives, so nothing competes for its food.
