- Despite their tropical appearance, American Flamingos can tolerate surprisingly cool temperatures and have even been seen feeding in chilly waters.
- American Flamingos filter-feed by turning their heads upside down in the water, using their specialized bills to sift out food. Their chicks are born with gray down feathers, only developing their iconic pink color as they mature. These birds are also known for standing on one leg, a behavior thought to help conserve body heat.
