- Unlike many small mammals in cold habitats, American Pikas are active year-round and do not hibernate, relying entirely on their haypiles for winter survival.
- American Pikas do not hibernate and instead survive winter by creating large haypiles of dried plants. They have a unique vocal communication system, using sharp calls to warn others of predators or mark territory. Pikas can withstand freezing temperatures, but prolonged exposure to heat above 25°C (77°F) can be fatal.
