- Unlike many small mammals in cold habitats, American Pikas are active year-round and do not hibernate, relying entirely on their haypiles for winter survival.
- American Pikas do not hibernate and instead survive winter by creating large haypiles of dried plants. They have a unique vocal communication system, using sharp calls to warn others of predators or mark territory. Pikas can withstand freezing temperatures, but prolonged exposure to heat above 25ยฐC (77ยฐF) can be fatal.
