American Robin
Turdus migratorius
The American robin is not a robin. Homesick English colonists named it after the small European robin because of the red breast; it is in fact a thrush, and its nearest relatives are blackbirds and fieldfares. Its signature move โ running a few steps, stopping, and cocking its hโฆ
Did you know?
- American Robins sometimes get intoxicated from eating fermented berries in late autumn.
- Robins routinely get drunk on fermented berries in late winter, and intoxicated birds have been recorded falling out of trees and colliding with windows. A robin may raise two or three broods in one season, but only around a quarter of fledglings survive their first year. Their winter roosts can hold enormous numbers of birds โ flocks of a quarter of a million have been recorded in Florida.
