- Despite being classified as a shorebird, the American Woodcock spends almost its entire life far from water, preferring dense, damp woodlands.
- American Woodcocks perform a spectacular 'sky dance' during mating season, flying in wide spirals accompanied by distinct twittering sounds. Their eyes are set far back on their heads, giving them an almost 360-degree field of view. They are also known as 'timberdoodles' due to their distinctive habitat and appearance.
