- Despite being classified as carnivores, up to 85% of the Andean bear's diet is plant-based.
- Paddington Bear was written as an Andean bear from "darkest Peru", which is one of the few cases of an obscure species getting a global mascot. Andean bears are the largest land carnivoran in South America even though meat is a small part of their diet. They are important seed dispersers in cloud forest, and their habit of ripping open bromeliads creates water-holding microhabitats used by frogs and insects.
