Antarctic Krill
Euphausia superba
Antarctic krill may be the most abundant single wild animal species on Earth by biomass: estimates put the standing stock in the hundreds of millions of tonnes, comparable to or exceeding the mass of all humans. They form swarms so dense โ up to tens of thousands of animals per โฆ
Did you know?
- An estimated 380 million tons of Antarctic krill inhabit the Southern Ocean, making them a cornerstone species for the entire Antarctic ecosystem.
- That daily vertical migration is a carbon pump: krill feed near the surface, then sink and release dense faecal pellets at depth, exporting an estimated tens of millions of tonnes of carbon out of the surface ocean every year. Krill swarms can stretch for kilometres and were once mistaken for shoals of fish on early sonar. A blue whale eats several tonnes of krill in a day, an entire multi-tonne mammal built out of animals a few centimetres long.
