- Despite being an amphibian, the Appalachian Seal Salamander spends almost its entire life on land, only returning to water to lay eggs.
- The Appalachian Seal Salamander is lungless, breathing entirely through its skin and the lining of its mouth. It is quick-moving and often escapes predators by rapidly darting under rocks or into the water. Its coloration and patterning provide excellent camouflage among streamside stones and leaf litter.
