- The Arroyo Toad was once common throughout much of Southern California, but its range has been reduced by over 75% due to urban development and waterway modifications.
- Arroyo Toads have adapted to breed only in shallow, slow-moving streams with sandy bottoms. Their call is a high-pitched trill heard mostly at night in spring. These toads can survive long dry periods by burrowing underground to avoid dehydration.
