- The Asian arowana is so protected that international trade is strictly regulated by CITES, and each permitted aquarium specimen is microchipped for identification.
- Asian arowanas are sometimes called 'dragon fish' because their scales and body shape resemble depictions of mythical dragons in Asian cultures. They are mouthbrooders, with males carrying fertilized eggs and young fry in their mouths for protection. Some color varieties can fetch tens of thousands of dollars in the aquarium trade.
