Did you know?
- A single female Atlantic cod can produce several million eggs in a single spawning season.
- Cod "drum" by vibrating muscles against the swim bladder, and males produce distinct grunting sounds during spawning; hydrophones can be used to find spawning aggregations. The chin barbel is a taste organ, used to detect buried prey on the bottom. Cod liver oil was such a valuable by-product that in some periods the liver was worth more per fish than the flesh.
