- The Atlas Beetle is named after the Greek titan Atlas, as the males' strength and impressive horns reminded early naturalists of the mythological figure who bore the weight of the sky.
- Male Atlas Beetles use their horns to wrestle rivals during mating competitions. Their larvae can grow up to 12 cm long and are voracious eaters of decaying wood. Despite their fearsome appearance, they are harmless to humans.
