- Australian Magpies are among the most intelligent birds, capable of using tools and solving complex problems.
- Because magpies remember faces, people who have fed a magpie are often left alone by the same bird that attacks strangers on the same footpath. Groups defend a permanent territory year-round and sing group choruses to advertise it, so the same family may occupy a suburban block for a decade or more. Magpies have been shown to help each other remove leg bands in an experiment, an unexpected case of apparently altruistic behaviour in a bird.
