Axolotl
Ambystoma mexicanum
The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) is a unique amphibian native to the ancient lake systems of Xochimilco and Chalco in Mexico City. Unlike most salamanders, axolotls exhibit neoteny, meaning they retain juvenile traits throughout their life, such as their feathery external gillsโฆ
Did you know?
- Axolotls almost never undergo metamorphosis, unlike most salamanders, and spend their entire lives in water.
- Axolotls have an extraordinary ability to regenerate not only limbs but also parts of their heart, lungs, and even sections of their brain, a feat that has intrigued scientists studying regenerative medicine. Unlike many amphibians, axolotls do not undergo a metamorphic transition to a terrestrial adult form, a trait that has provided insights into evolutionary biology and developmental genetics. Despite their aquatic nature, axolotls can be induced to undergo metamorphosis into a terrestrial form through hormonal treatments, though this is rarely done outside of scientific research due to the stress it causes the animals.
