Baird's Tapir
Tapirus bairdii
Baird's tapir is the largest native land mammal in Central America and one of the least often seen. It is shy, largely nocturnal, and keeps to dense forest and water, and its growing scarcity is a problem that extends far beyond the animal itself: like all tapirs it swallows larβ¦
Did you know?
- Baird's Tapir is sometimes called the 'mountain cow' by locals, yet it is more closely related to horses and rhinoceroses than to cows.
- It is the largest native land mammal in Central America, and rarely seen. Its trunk-like proboscis grips vegetation and works as a snorkel β it can walk along riverbeds underwater. It moves large seeds that nothing else in its range can disperse, so losing it changes the forest itself. Gestation is about thirteen months for a single calf, so the species cannot absorb losses.
