Did you know?
- Despite possessing highly toxic venom, the banded sea krait is very docile and bites humans only in extreme self-defense.
- Sea kraits hunting a reef are often shadowed by trevally and goatfish, which snatch the small fish that flee the crevices the krait is probing — an interspecies partnership that the fish initiate. It has a salt-excreting gland under the tongue, so the last of the excess salt is flicked out with every tongue flick. A single small island in the Pacific may serve as a shared breeding rookery holding hundreds of kraits that swim in from a wide area of reef.
