- Unlike most macaques, Barbary macaques have no visible tail, making them easily distinguishable from their relatives.
- Legend holds that Gibraltar will remain British only as long as the macaques stay, and in 1942 Churchill reportedly ordered the population restocked when it fell to a handful of animals. Barbary macaques are the only macaque in which males routinely handle infants, and infants effectively function as social currency between adult males. They live at altitudes over 2,000 m and endure snow, an unusual environment for a macaque.
