- Despite their intimidating teeth and tough jaws, barred knifejaws are not aggressive toward humans and can sometimes be hand-fed in aquariums.
- Barred knifejaws have incredibly strong jaws capable of crushing the shells of barnacles, mollusks, and crabs. Their distinctive vertical bars provide camouflage among rocks and kelp. Unlike many reef fish, they can tolerate a range of salinities and sometimes enter brackish waters.
