- Barred Owls can rotate their heads up to 270 degrees to better see their surroundings and hunt prey.
- Barred owls that eat a lot of crayfish can turn pink, because carotenoids from the crustaceans tint their feathers — pink-washed owls have been recorded in the southern US. They are far more vocal than most owls, with a repertoire that includes a hair-raising "caterwauling" duet between mates that sounds like monkeys screaming. Unlike most owls they will bathe and hunt in daylight, especially when feeding chicks.
