The tiger salamander is the largest land salamander in North America, and its most remarkable trick is that it does not always bother becoming one. Given a permanent, stable pond and a poor terrestrial environment, the larvae may simply never metamorphose: they keep their featheβ¦
Did you know?
- Barred Tiger Salamanders can produce a sticky, toxic secretion from their skin to deter predators.
- In a stable pond it may never grow up at all β keeping its gills and breeding as a giant larva, exactly as an axolotl does. Crowded larvae can turn into a distinct cannibal form, with a broader head and bigger teeth, and eat the others. Those cannibals appear to avoid eating their own close relatives. Adults live underground most of the year, surfacing on rainy nights to breed.
