- Despite their sad-looking expression and slow gait, Basset Hounds are very determined hunters that can track a scent for miles without giving up.
- Basset Hounds have one of the best-developed senses of smell among all dog breeds, second only to the Bloodhound. Their long, droopy ears help sweep scents from the ground toward their nose. The breed's name comes from the French word 'bas', meaning 'low', referring to their short stature.
