Bearded Dragon
Pogona vitticeps
The "beard" is a throat pouch stiffened by the hyoid apparatus; a dragon flares it and turns it jet black as a threat, and the colour change is a genuine physiological display, not a mood ring. Its opposite is arm-waving: a dragon raises one forelimb and rotates it slowly in a cโฆ
Did you know?
- Bearded Dragons can run on their hind legs when startled, allowing them to move quickly while evading predators.
- A bearded dragon's cycling between sleep states is far faster than a human's, switching every couple of minutes rather than every ninety. They are native to the hot, arid interior of Australia and are strictly diurnal, basking to raise body temperature before they can digest a meal. Australia bans the export of its native wildlife, so essentially every pet bearded dragon on Earth descends from animals smuggled out decades ago.
