Bharal (Blue Sheep)
Pseudois nayaur
The bharal, or blue sheep, is neither a sheep nor a goat but sits genetically between them, closer to goats, and it has puzzled taxonomists for a century. Its slate-blue-grey coat is not camouflage in the usual sense: the bharal does not hide, it stands in the open on Himalayan โฆ
Did you know?
- Bharals play a critical ecological role as the primary prey of the endangered snow leopard, helping maintain balance in the Himalayan ecosystem.
- Peter Matthiessen's "The Snow Leopard" is nominally an account of a journey to study the rut of the bharal โ the survey was George Schaller's, and the leopard was never seen. Bharal are so at ease on cliffs that they will bed down on ledges barely wider than their own bodies. Their standing in the open against grey rock is so effective that experienced observers routinely scan a hillside and see nothing until an animal moves.
