The binturong smells of buttered popcorn, and this is not a figure of speech. Its urine contains 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline, the very same compound produced when popcorn is heated and the molecule that gives basmati rice its aroma, and the animal produces it without any cooking at all…

- Binturongs play an important ecological role by dispersing the seeds of strangler fig trees, which depend almost entirely on them for propagation.
- It smells strongly of buttered popcorn — its urine contains the exact compound that gives popcorn and basmati rice their aroma. It is one of only two carnivorans on Earth with a truly prehensile tail, which it can hang from. It marks territory by dragging that scented tail as it moves through the canopy. Its gut is one of the few that can soften a strangler fig's seed coat, making it a vital disperser.
