- Young Black-crowned Night Herons look completely different from adults, with brown, streaky plumage that provides camouflage in their wetland habitats.
- Black-crowned Night Herons are one of the most widespread heron species in the world, found on every continent except Australia and Antarctica. Unlike most herons, they are most active at dawn and dusk, preferring to hunt under low light conditions. During the breeding season, adults grow long white plumes on their head, which are used in courtship displays.
