- The black rain frog can emit a high-pitched squeak when handled, which is unusual among frogs of its size.
- Unlike many frogs, the black rain frog does not require standing water to breed, and it lays its eggs in underground burrows. Its perpetually 'angry' face has made it an internet sensation. When threatened, it can puff up its body, making itself appear both larger and more difficult for predators to remove from its burrow.
