Did you know?
- The black rhinoceros population has plummeted by over 95% since 1960 due to poaching and habitat loss, making it one of the rarest large mammals in Africa.
- A black rhino's keen sense of smell and hearing compensates for its relatively poor eyesight, allowing it to detect predators and navigate its environment effectively. Unlike many other large herbivores, black rhinos are typically solitary animals, coming together only for mating or in the case of mothers with young. Despite their solitary nature, they have a fascinating symbiotic relationship with oxpeckers, birds that feed on ticks and other parasites found on the rhino's skin, providing a natural form of pest control. Interestingly, the black rhino's ancestors are believed to have diverged from other rhino species around 5 million years ago, showcasing a long evolutionary history that underscores its unique adaptations.
