- Despite their reputation as the ugliest animal, blobfish are rarely seen by humans in their natural habitat and look quite different under the immense pressure of the deep sea.
- Blobfish do not have muscles for active hunting and instead feed by opening their mouths and waiting for food to drift by. Their unique gelatinous bodies are an adaptation to extreme pressure rather than appearance; they collapse and appear 'blobby' only when brought to the surface. The blobfish was voted the 'World's Ugliest Animal' in 2013, which brought it international fame.
