Did you know?
- Despite their reputation as the ugliest animal, blobfish are rarely seen by humans in their natural habitat and look quite different under the immense pressure of the deep sea.
- It was voted the World's Ugliest Animal in a 2013 poll run by the Ugly Animal Preservation Society, a campaign to draw attention to unphotogenic endangered species. The specific fish in the famous picture, nicknamed Mr Blobby, was trawled up in 2003 and is preserved at the Australian Museum in Sydney. Blobfish are caught only as accidental bycatch by deep bottom trawlers, which is also the main threat to them.
