Blue Jay
Cyanocitta cristata
A blue jay is not blue. There is no blue pigment anywhere in its feathers โ only brown melanin โ and the colour is structural, produced by microscopic air pockets in the feather barbs that scatter blue light back at you. Crush a blue jay's feather between your fingers and it turโฆ
Did you know?
- Blue Jays are responsible for helping spread oak trees, as they often bury acorns which later grow into new trees.
- Jays raise and lower the crest as a mood signal: flat means calm, fully erect means agitated or aggressive. Blue jay migration is genuinely mysterious โ some birds migrate south in loose flocks and others of the same population stay put, and an individual may migrate one year and not the next, with no known explanation. Many of the acorns they cache are never retrieved, which is precisely why the relationship works for the oak.
