Did you know?
- Despite their dazzling appearance, blue-rayed limpets are extremely well-camouflaged on the dark surfaces of kelp, making them difficult for predators and humans to spot.
- The blue-rayed limpet’s iridescent stripes are caused by layers of calcite and protein that act as photonic crystals. It spends most of its life clinging to kelp, feeding on the algae’s surface. Juveniles often migrate up the kelp stipe as they grow, effectively spreading out the population.
