Blue Tit
Cyanistes caeruleus
A blue tit is a much more colourful bird than you can see. Its blue crown reflects strongly in ultraviolet, and blue tits can see UV, so where a human sees two similar birds, they see a bright male and a duller female β and females choose mates on the brightness of that UV crownβ¦
Did you know?
- A single Blue Tit pair can feed their chicks up to 1,000 caterpillars per day during the breeding season.
- A blue tit may lay a clutch of ten to twelve eggs and, at the peak, deliver a caterpillar to the nest roughly every minute of daylight. It is light and acrobatic enough to hang upside down from the very tips of twigs, exploiting insects on foliage too flimsy to hold heavier tits β a niche partition that lets several tit species share the same wood. Blue tits will use pungent aromatic plants such as lavender and mint in the nest lining, which appears to reduce bacterial and parasite loads on the chicks.
