Did you know?
- Bluegills have been introduced to many countries outside their native range, sometimes becoming invasive and impacting local aquatic ecosystems.
- Bluegill were introduced to Japan from a 1960 gift of fish to the then-crown prince, later Emperor Akihito, and escaped into the wild, where they became a serious invasive problem; the Emperor publicly expressed regret about it decades later. They are the state fish of Illinois. Their small deep bodies make them awkward to swallow, and largemouth bass populations are effectively built on them.
