- Unlike many other rays, the bluespotted ribbontail ray can breathe while buried in sand by drawing water in through special openings called spiracles located just behind its eyes.
- Bluespotted ribbontail rays can bury themselves in sand to hide from predators and ambush prey. Their bright blue spots may serve as a warning to potential predators about their venomous tail spines. These rays often form small groups, especially during the day when they rest together under rocks or coral ledges.
