Did you know?
- The Eastern or mountain bongo (T. e. isaaci) is one of the rarest large mammals in Africa, with fewer than 100 individuals left in the wild.
- Bongos are largely nocturnal and are so shy that the eastern subspecies was studied for years mostly through camera traps and dung. Adults show a strong attraction to natural salt licks, and mineral-rich forest clearings become long-term gathering points. Calves grow horns unusually quickly for an antelope, within a few months, which fits an animal whose defence is not open-country flight.
