- Bonobos are the only great apes that do not kill members of their own species in the wild.
- Bonobos will voluntarily share food with complete strangers from another group even when they gain nothing, and they show a preference for interacting with unfamiliar individuals — the opposite of the chimpanzee, which kills them. Encounters between bonobo groups can involve grooming, play and sex rather than violence. They are the last great ape to be scientifically described, recognised as distinct only in 1929, from a skull in a Belgian museum.
