Boomslang
Dispholidus typus
The boomslang is a rear-fanged snake, a category long dismissed as harmless, and it is one of the deadliest snakes in Africa. Its venom is a potent haemotoxin that consumes the blood's clotting factors, triggering disseminated intravascular coagulation โ the victim bleeds from eโฆ
Did you know?
- It can open its jaws up to 170 degrees when striking, an unusually wide gape for a snake.
- Boomslang means simply "tree snake" in Afrikaans. Because the fangs are set well back in the mouth, the snake must get a good chewing hold to envenomate, which is why the vast majority of human bites happen to people deliberately handling them. Its venom is drop-for-drop more toxic than that of many cobras, but the yield is small and the snake almost never bites.
