- The Borneo Earless Monitor is the only living species in its family, Lanthanotidae, making it one of the most evolutionarily distinct lizards on Earth.
- Despite its common name, the Borneo Earless Monitor does have internal ears, but lacks external ear openings. It is sometimes called a 'living fossil' due to its ancient lineage and unique evolutionary position. Its skin can fluoresce under ultraviolet light, revealing hidden patterns.
